Where the evidence is strong

Sodium bicarbonate is the most studied buffer in sport. The International Society of Sports Nutrition's position stand concludes 0.2-0.5 g/kg improves performance in high-intensity efforts lasting roughly 1 to 12 minutes. It's also the cheapest option on this list by a mile.

Beta-alanine works differently: taken daily for weeks, it raises muscle carnosine, your intracellular buffer.
