Calcium for athletes: the overlooked electrolyte

Ask an endurance athlete to name their electrolytes and you'll hear sodium, potassium, magnesium. Calcium usually gets filed under "bones" and forgotten. That's a mistake, because calcium is doing something in every single muscle contraction you produce, including the ones that fall apart in the back half of a race.

Calcium is the trigger for muscle contraction

Here's the part most athletes never get told. A muscle contracts when calcium ions are released inside the muscle fibre. That release is what lets the muscle's proteins grip and pull. When the signal stops, calcium gets pumped back, and the muscle relaxes. No calcium movement, no contraction. So calcium is the on switch for every contraction you make.

That physiology is textbook, not marketing. And it reframes calcium from "the bone mineral" into a working electrolyte that sits alongside sodium and potassium in the machinery of movement. Your body guards blood calcium levels tightly because the stakes are that high, which is also why deficiency shows up in your skeleton long before it shows up in a single session.

What training actually costs you

So do you sweat calcium out? A little. Sweat contains calcium, though in far smaller amounts than sodium, so you're not losing it at the rate that leaves you cramping mid-session the way a big sodium deficit can.

The longer-term concern for athletes is different and better evidenced. Hard training, low energy availability, and heavy sweating over months can nudge calcium balance in the wrong direction, and the body will pull calcium from bone to keep blood levels steady. For endurance athletes, especially those eating too little for their training load, that's a real risk to bone health rather than an acute performance problem (IOC consensus on Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport, 2018).

The takeaway is simple: consistent intake protects the structure you train on, and under-fuelling quietly taxes it. Chugging calcium right before a run does little.

How much, and from where

For most adults, the daily calcium target sits around 700 to 1,000 mg depending on the guideline you follow, and food covers it comfortably for people eating a varied diet (UK NHS guidance). Dairy is the obvious source. If you don't do dairy, fortified plant milks, tofu set with calcium, tinned fish with bones, and leafy greens do the job.

Two groups should pay closer attention. Athletes cutting dairy without replacing it, and athletes running low energy availability during a hard block or a cut. Both can drift below target without noticing, because calcium doesn't announce a shortfall the way low sodium announces itself with cramp.

Vitamin D matters here too, since it governs how much calcium you actually absorb. In the UK, where winter sun is thin, a lot of athletes are low on vitamin D and therefore absorbing less calcium than their intake suggests. The NHS recommends most adults consider a 10 microgram vitamin D supplement through autumn and winter, which is a cheap way to protect the absorption side of the equation.

A quick self-check: if you've cut dairy in the last year, if you're deep in a diet or a heavy block on low food, or if you rarely eat greens, fish, or fortified foods, calcium is worth a proper look. If none of that applies, you're almost certainly fine.

Where it fits an electrolyte plan

Calcium's role during exercise is smaller than sodium's. If you're building a during-session hydration strategy, sodium leads, because sodium is what you lose in volume when you sweat and what protects you against the performance dip and, at the extreme, hyponatremia (ACSM position stand on fluid replacement).
